What to know about groups in Broomfield, CO & Denver, CO
It’s important for us at WellMinded Counseling to acknowledge any elephant in the room. This means being honest with you in that group counseling can be hard to commit to. Groups can be intimating, having to meet new people, share your story with people you don’t know. You may feel anxious, cautious, and other emotions may be swimming in your head. But, in reality, every other person who is joining the group likely is experiencing those same emotions. That is why we talk openly about our anxiety and other emotions during the group session itself. This allows us to promote connections between group members.
Group Counseling is just as Effective as One-on-One
The other thing is, research shows that group counseling is as effective as individual counseling for a variety of issues. Especially when you're looking to feel less alone and find a supportive community. Connection is key and having corrective experiences help us all heal and grow. A group setting is a great way to facilitate those two healing attributes of group counseling. Support groups will be open, so you can come and go as you please. But, the more often you come, the more likely you will experience the benefits from coming to the group.
You can share in-depth experiences!
Attending support groups provides a chance for people to share personal experiences, feelings, coping strategies, or firsthand information about experiences that they may be going through. Our support groups will offer educational opportunities from the therapist in groups. But, the groups will be person-focused. This allows the topics explored to be those that seem most relevant to the attendees.
Benefits of Attending Support Groups
Benefits of participating in a support group may include:
Feeling less lonely, isolated, or judged
Reducing distress, depression, anxiety, or fatigue
Talking openly and honestly about your feelings
Improving skills to cope with challenges
Staying motivated to manage chronic conditions or stick to treatment plans
Gaining a sense of empowerment, control, or hope
Improving understanding of mental health issues and your own experience with it
Getting practical feedback about treatment options
Learning about different resources that may be available to you
Remember that support groups aren't a substitute for regular mental health care. Let your therapist know that you're participating in a support group and check in with them as often as you can.
