Frequently Asked Questions

If both partners are willing to try again, recovery after an affair is possible with couples counseling. It requires courage, however, to look closely at how the relationship reached that point.

During this process, partners often experience a rollercoaster of emotions—anger, guilt, and defensiveness can easily take over and derail the conversation. Your couples therapist’s role is to help you make sense of these emotions and create a safe space to talk about the affair without shame or blame.

Through relationship or marriage counseling, couples can face this immense challenge together and begin to redefine what they mean to one another. With guidance, you’ll gain a clearer understanding of the impact you have on each other and take steps toward rebuilding trust.

It may feel overwhelming, but remember: your therapist is there to gently guide you toward healing.

On average, relationship or marriage counseling lasts about 12 sessions. Around 65% of couples complete therapy within 20 sessions, while some continue for longer-term work of 50 sessions or more.

So, there’s no single timeline that works for everyone. The length of the process depends on your goals, needs, and level of engagement. Fortunately, you don’t need to worry about figuring that out alone—it will be discussed collaboratively between you and your therapist.

It can be discouraging when one partner isn’t open to couples counseling, especially if the other is ready to seek support. Feeling disappointed or stuck in this situation is normal, but it’s also important to acknowledge and respect your partner’s choice.

What you can do is focus on the potential benefits therapy might bring you and share—without pressure—how you believe it could support your relationship, such as by improving communication or working through challenges together.

If your partner still prefers not to join, you can always begin therapy on your own. Sometimes, seeing the positive changes it creates in you and in how you show up in the relationship may encourage them to give it a chance later on.

Insurance usually covers the treatment of mental illnesses for one person at a time, called the “primary client”. They are often flexible and typically cover sessions if a family member or spouse needs to be involved and present. This is usually the scenario where insurance companies cover couples counseling.

However, if the “primary client” is already in individual therapy for a mental health diagnosis, we cannot bill insurance for couples therapy since treatment is already in progress. For these reasons, it’s also not possible for us to bill insurance if what brings you to therapy is not related to a mental illness (e.g., communication, conflict, transitions).

That said, some insurance carriers do cover couples counseling for issues unrelated to mental illness, though this is rare. You can check with your provider to see if your plan reimburses or covers “Z code” diagnoses, specifically Z63.0 (“Relationship Distress with Spouse or Intimate Partner”). Most insurance plans exclude this coverage.

Unless your policy includes a Z code, we are unable to bill insurance. Out-of-pocket rates for couples counseling are $170 for 80-minute sessions.
