The “model minority” myth paints certain groups—often Asian Americans—as universally successful, hardworking, and high-achieving. At first glance, this may sound like a compliment, but in reality, it’s a harmful stereotype that creates unrealistic expectations and deep divides.
The model minority myth pressures individuals to meet impossible standards and dismisses the real struggles they may face, from mental health challenges to discrimination. It tells people they can’t ask for help because “others have it worse,” silencing pain and fueling shame.
This stereotype also hurts other communities by reinforcing a false hierarchy among racial and ethnic groups. It suggests that success or struggle is about effort alone, ignoring the systemic barriers that affect opportunities differently. In doing so, it divides communities that should be united in advocating for equity and understanding.
At WellMinded Counseling, we believe everyone deserves to be seen as a whole person—not as a stereotype or a comparison. Healing starts with being able to share your story authentically, free from the weight of expectation.
If you’re feeling unseen, pressured to be “perfect,” or disconnected from your identity, therapy can offer a safe space to explore and reclaim your truth.
You don’t have to fit the mold to be worthy of care.
