At the heart of great therapy is the relationship between therapist and client. For Anna Dwyer, LPCC, therapy isn’t about rushing toward solutions—it’s about creating a space where people who need direction, care, or healing feel safe enough to be fully themselves, free of shame, and hopeful about what their path forward can look like.

Anna brings professional training, having completed her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Denver Seminary, but what’s more important for her is the deeply personal insight from decades of time spent on the other side of the room as a therapy client herself. It’s this history sitting in your shoes that she is most proud to bring to her work as a therapist. With a thoughtful and compassionate approach, Anna brings a strong belief that every person is unique in their needs and deserves a place where they can find peace and healing into every session.

A Conversational, Trauma-Informed Approach to Therapy

Anna practices trauma-informed cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), helping clients identify patterns in their thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors that may be keeping them stuck.

Her sessions are intentionally relaxed and conversational. Rather than diving immediately into heavy topics, Anna often starts with a simple check-in: “How was your week?” From there, together you’ll decide what to work on.

She often uses the phrase “fast is slow and slow is fast” when talking about the process of healing through therapy – building trust is a potentially lengthy, but completely necessary step to take before the deep hard work can begin. This gentle beginning helps clients ease into the session and builds the trust needed to explore deeper issues over time.

Through this process, Anna works collaboratively with clients to:

  • Recognize patterns in thinking and behavior
  • Understand how past experiences may shape present struggles
  • Develop new ways of responding to challenges

The goal isn’t to overwhelm clients with change. Instead, it’s to help them take meaningful steps forward—one at a time.

Removing Shame: The First Step Toward Healing

One of the central ideas guiding Anna’s work is the belief that shame is one of the biggest barriers to healing.

When people carry shame about their experiences, beliefs, or emotions, it can keep them from speaking honestly—even in therapy. Anna works intentionally to create what she describes as the “safest space” possible, where clients feel free to show up exactly as they are.

In that space, something powerful can happen: people begin to feel hope.

And hope is often the beginning of real change.

A “Marathon” Philosophy of Therapy

Because of Anna’s personal therapy journey over the last two decades, she approaches therapy with what she calls a “marathon mindset.”

Instead of feeling pressure to “fix” clients or solve everything quickly, Anna focuses on helping them run one lap well – fast is slow and slow is fast. Each step forward matters, and healing happens gradually rather than at a sprinter’s pace.

This approach removes pressure from the therapeutic process and allows clients to grow at a pace that not only feels sustainable, but actually is.

Supporting Clients with Unique Life Experiences

Anna is particularly passionate about supporting individuals whose life experiences may not always be fully understood or supported elsewhere.

She specializes in working with:

  • People of color navigating personal, cultural, or systemic challenges
  • Individuals processing trauma connected to religious beliefs or spiritual environments of any kind

By bringing cultural awareness and sensitivity into therapy, Anna helps clients explore their experiences in a way that honors both their identity and their healing journey.

Life Outside the Therapy Room

When she isn’t working with clients, Anna enjoys simple ways of unwinding and recharging.

You might find her:

  • Reading a good romance novel (she is currently on the hockey romance trend, like everyone else)
  • Spending time with her husband, Andy, who works as a minister to college students.
  • Hanging out with her dog, Tamale, a one year old black lab that she hopes (but maybe doesn’t expect) will serve as a therapy dog in the future.

And if you love travel, you might be impressed by this fun fact: Anna has visited all six habitable continents.
