Adjusting to Parenthood... How Therapy Can Help

By Carrie Frey

Being a new parent is one of the most joyous occasions a new mom and/or dad can experience.

In the blink of an eye, you have this overwhelming abundance of love for this little human that becomes your sole purpose. In those first few months of parenthood, all you want to do is protect this most precious tiny gift.  No one can truly be prepared for that moment…the moment your precious baby is placed in your arms for the very first time.  That moment your life changes forever.

With that moment, comes change.  Your sleep is a whole new ball game.  You are up all the time and sleep during weird hours.  Awake because your baby is awake, hungry, fussy, wet, or because you just worry.  Worry about all the things you never thought you would worry about.  Do you have the right baby monitor, am I feeding too much…too little, do I have the right crib, pacifier, and diapers, and the list goes on and on.  And ultimately am I being a good parent?

Parenthood Changes Your Relationship With Your Partner

Your relationship with your partner changes as well.  They are no longer the sole or primary focus in your life, you have this little one that needs your full-time attention.  Your partner may feel left out or less important. You have to redefine your roles and responsibilities.  In your most tiresome days, how do you keep the spark alive and the partnership on track without losing sight of his/her needs?

Your Friendships Change

Your friendships change. Some of your friends are still single and have the lifestyle that goes with that.  Others may have already been through the baby phase and have older kids or those off to college.   Regardless, they change.

Therapy for Parents Can Help with the changes in your emotions

Your emotions change - you feel things differently.  You experience things differently through the eyes of a parent; reflecting on your own childhood and some develop a new appreciation over the years for their parents.

Change isn’t a bad thing…change is good. It keeps us growing and evolving.

But it can be hard. Therapy for Parents in Tampa can help.  We can help.

How to make it through the challenging times…find support with an experienced therapist, peers, and those similar to you.  This helps you not feel so alone, and tired and can bring out new ideas and new friendships that may last for years.

At WellMinded Counseling, we have found that there are a lot of resources available at minimal or low costs in Tampa, FL.  Champions for Children and Baby Bungalow Classes, My Gym, local County Recreation Centers, and Storytime at the local libraries.  There are interactive places to visit such as the Glazer Children’s Museum or in St Petersburg The Great Explorations.  In Palm Harbor, there is a gym called Little Explorers.  Those are just a few fun ideas to help get you on your way.  Four other ideas and help - reach out
