As the summer days come to an end, many families begin preparing for a new school year. While buying school supplies, picking out new clothes, and meeting teachers can be exciting, this time of year can also bring anxiety for many children. Whether they are starting kindergarten, moving to a new school, or simply adjusting to a new routine, back to school season can feel overwhelming.

A little nervousness is completely normal. Change can be difficult for children, even when it is something positive. The key is recognizing when those worries need extra support and helping children feel safe, heard, and understood.

Back to school anxiety can show up in different ways depending on a child’s age and personality. Some children may become clingy or emotional. Others may complain of stomachaches, headaches, or trouble sleeping. You might notice increased irritability, frequent tears, or a reluctance to talk about school. Older children may worry about making friends, keeping up with schoolwork, or fitting in with their classmates.

One of the most important things parents can do is create space for open conversations. Instead of immediately trying to solve the problem, start by listening. Ask questions like, “What are you feeling nervous about?” or “What do you think might happen?” Giving your child the opportunity to express their fears helps them feel validated and understood.

It is also helpful to remind children that feeling nervous does not mean something bad will happen. Anxiety often makes our minds imagine worst case scenarios. Helping children identify those thoughts and gently replace them with more realistic ones can build confidence. For example, if your child says, “No one will want to be my friend,” you might respond with, “Making friends can take time, but you’ve made friends before, and there will be lots of kids looking for new friends too.”

Preparing ahead of time can also reduce anxiety. A few weeks before school starts, begin adjusting bedtime and morning routines. Visit the school if possible, practice the drive or walk, and talk through what the first day might look like. Familiarity can make new experiences feel much less intimidating.

Children often look to the adults around them for reassurance. While it is natural for parents to have their own worries, staying calm and confident can help children feel secure. Let them know that you believe in their ability to handle challenges and remind them that you will be there to support them every step of the way.

It is equally important to avoid dismissing your child’s fears. Statements like “You’ll be fine” or “There’s nothing to worry about” are often well intentioned but can make children feel like their emotions are not important. Instead, try saying, “I know this feels scary right now, and I’m here with you.” Simple words of empathy can go a long way.

If anxiety begins interfering with your child’s daily life, such as refusing to attend school, experiencing frequent physical symptoms, or becoming withdrawn, it may be time to seek additional support. Working with a mental health professional can help children learn healthy coping skills while giving parents guidance on how to best support them.
