How Does EMDR Therapy Work?

Most individuals wonder what actually occurs in a typical EMDR therapy session. There are eight phases of EDMR therapy. The first focuses on taking a thorough client history. This is then followed by a preparation stage. In the Rapid Eye Movement stage, the client focuses on a troubling memory. They identify the belief they have about themselves connected to this negative memory. For example, a person has an absent parent and may have the thought “I’m not good enough."

Then, the person formulates a positive belief that they would like to have about themselves. This may be a belief such as “I am a worthwhile and good person." All the physical sensations and emotions that are a part of the memory get identified. The person then recalls the memory while focusing on an external stimulus that creates bilateral (side to side) eye movement. The EMDR therapist may also use bilateral sound or bilateral tappers that vibrate. After each set of bilateral movements, the individual is then asked how they feel. This process continues until the memory is no longer disturbing.

The individual processes the trauma with both hemispheres of the brain stimulated.

The chosen positive belief is then installed, via bilateral movement, to replace the negative one. Each session usually lasts for about one hour. It's believed EMDR works because the “bilateral stimulation” bypasses the area of the brain that has become stuck due to the trauma. The trauma prevents the left side of the brain from self-soothing the right side of the brain.

During this procedure, clients often “process” the memory in a new way. Thus, leading to a peaceful resolution. This often results in increased insight about past disturbing events and long-held negative thoughts about the self. Often, these beliefs have grown out of the original traumatic event. For example, an assault victim may come to realize that they are not to blame for what happened. They realize they are now safe, the event is over, and, as a result, they can regain a general sense of safety in their world.
